โ๏ธ How Social Recovery Works
The Guardian Model
The user who controls the wallet and sets up guardians. Only the owner can initiate a recovery request.
Trusted individuals, devices, or institutions selected by the owner. Usually 3-5 guardians are recommended.
The owner initiates a recovery by signing a request with a new address. Guardians verify and sign.
The minimum number of guardian signatures required (e.g., 3 of 5) to approve the recovery.
The Recovery Process
-
1
Setup
The wallet owner deploys a smart contract wallet with social recovery. They designate guardians (e.g., 5 trusted friends) and set a threshold (e.g., 3 of 5 signatures required).
-
2
Loss Event
The owner loses their private key or seed phrase. They cannot access their wallet normally.
-
3
Recovery Initiation
The owner (or someone on their behalf) initiates a recovery request using a new wallet address. The request is sent to the guardians.
-
4
Guardian Approval
Guardians verify the owner's identity (via out-of-band communication) and sign the recovery request. Once the threshold is met, the request is valid.
-
5
Wallet Transfer
The smart contract transfers ownership to the new wallet address provided by the owner. Funds are now accessible again.

๐ก๏ธ Security Considerations
- Guardian Selection: Choose guardians who are trustworthy, accessible, and capable of using crypto wallets. Consider diversity (family, friends, professional services).
- Guardian Communication: Establish out-of-band communication channels (phone, email, in-person) to verify identity during recovery.
- Guardian Threshold: Use a threshold (e.g., 3 of 5) to balance security and availability. Too low = risk of collusion. Too high = risk of unavailable guardians.
- Smart Contract Risk: Ensure the recovery contract is audited. Bugs could lock funds or enable unauthorized recovery.
- Privacy: Consider that guardians may need to know you hold crypto assets. This has privacy implications.
Use a multi-layer approach: social recovery for daily use, dead man switch for inheritance, and a hardware wallet or multisig for the highest security. Always test your recovery process before relying on it.
๐ The Future of Social Recovery
- Decentralized Identity Integration: Social recovery will integrate with DID systems, enabling identity-based recovery without specific guardian addresses.
- AI-Enhanced Recovery: AI will help verify identity through behavioral patterns, reducing reliance on manual guardian verification.
- Cross-Chain Recovery: Recovery contracts will support assets across multiple chains, enabling unified recovery for multi-chain portfolios.
- Institutional Inheritance Services: Regulated custody providers will offer social recovery as a service, with legal backing for asset distribution.
- Zero-Knowledge Recovery: ZK proofs will enable recovery without revealing guardian identities or wallet contents.

โ๏ธ Social Recovery vs. Seed Phrase
Seed phrases are a single point of failure. Social recovery distributes trust across multiple guardians, making it more secure and more user-friendly for non-technical users.
